The Studio
Where the work occasionally gets done, and works in progress

Gridwork 1
16 x 20

This is an attempt to marry my tendency to be very linear with abstracted strokes and swirls. It's hard to see here, but the background is a grid of one-inch squares. It's the first in a series of smaller paintings that the average person may actually have room to hang in the home.

This is essentially my studio space. It's a spare bedroom in my home. It isn't as large as I'd like, but you use what you have. I also like to paint outdoors when I can, because I tend to fling paint around with abandon and make a big mess. My early definition of a real artist was a person who gets more paint on themselves than on the canvas. It still holds true in my case, and my wife hates it when I get paint all over the furniture.

I prefer that my work speak for itself, but on this page I’m going to talk a bit about the pieces I’m working on.

Composition 1051
12 x 24

This is another smaller painting that is an a progression of my recent work. I love to apply heavy ransom strokes and then explore the patterns that result.

Dave Matthews
16 x 20

This is a painting I'm doing at my daughter's request; she is a huge Dave Matthews fan. This was supposed to be a Christmas gift, but I didn't have the time to start it until now. I prefer not to paint from someone else's photography, but for this I'm making an exception. I'm using this as an opportunity to see just how expressionistic I can get and still maintain a likeness. I usually don't underpaint on a portrait, but I'm also experimenting with that and using alkyds, to boot. I hope to show this in various stages of completion side by side to illustrate how it develops.
