I have been interested in the arts all my life. My entire professional career has revolved around commercial graphics. I've worked as creative director at U.S. Awards in Pittsburg, Kansas and as a freelance graphic designer.
Most of my paintings are non-objective because it's so opposite my nature, which is lots of precise angles and lines. Most of my work is truly random. I may start with a plan, but it rarely turns out the way I envision. My abstracts are truly works of discovery--as I work, surprises occur. Things suggest themselves and ideas and approaches develop during each step. There tend to be many layers in my paintings, and I've become comfortable with the process of building up on the canvas just to see what will develop. My commmercial work sometimes informs my paintings as well. I've recently been influenced by a freelance assignment that involved graffiti. The series "Graffito" is a result of this influence, and it's involved some unusual media combinations, such as acrylics and pastels.
I've also always been drawn to faces. My dream when I was young was to develop the ability to do portraits in oils, but it always terrified me, and I would never allow myself to fail. About two years ago I decided to try again, with varying results. My goal is develop the ability to combine an acceptable likeness with a more painterly, expressionist style.
